The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County has provided high quality civil legal services to low-income children, families and seniors in San Mateo County since 1959. Serving over 2,300 people last year, and helping another 4,000 find the right resource, Legal Aid’s mission is to enhance access to justice for vulnerable populations. Legal Aid is committed to
resolving disputes at their earliest and lowest levels to avoid the cost and delays of litigation. 

Senior Advocates offers seniors help with government
benefit, landlord/tenant, consumer, and elder abuse problems. The Clients’ Rights Advocate provides advocacy for adults with disabilities. Kids in Crisis serves children with disabilities and their families including special education programs, SSI, In-Home Supportive Services, and California Children’s Services.  The Health Consumer Center helps settle health care
disputes between clients and HMOs. Legal Aid provides representation to Domestic Violence victims both with family law problems and with non-family law related legal issues. The Teen Parents Project helps pregnant
and parenting teens stabilize their family situations by providing advice and representation related to child custody and visitation, protection from abuse, paternity, emancipation, guardianships, government benefits and school problems. This project recently received the Silver Star Award from the Peninsula Partnership for Children Youth and Families. The
HomeSavers/Homebuilders project assists tenants to prevent eviction and promotes the development of more affordable housing. FirstStop provides help to low-income individuals who wish to start their own small businesses.

  Legal Aid’s FY2003 budget is $1.38 million.  Current funding comes from contributions ( 16%), foundations ( 24%), county/city contracts ( 22%), federal contracts (13%), donated services (13%), IOLTA (6%), San Mateo County Bar Association (2%) and attorney fees (4%). The Legal Aid Society has a staff of eight attorneys and eight support staff.  Approximately 100 attorneys and lay leaders volunteer at Legal Aid each year.
